Mike Love

If you think you hate the Beach Boys you probably really don’t, because the Beach Boys are more complicated than it seems: Brian Wilson wrote all their best music, and in the mid-60s when he tried to expand the band’s sound (just like the Beatles and many other groups), his smarmy douche bag cousin Mike Love resisted, unwilling (unable?) to sing about anything but surfing, cars, and girls. It led to Brian’s mental breakdown and the Beach Boys as a whole never really recovered. This was OK for Mike, though, who was happy singing about surfing, cars, and girls because he thought that’s what made the Beach Boys successful, and not Brian Wilson’s brilliant songwriting and arrangements. You don’t hate the Beach Boys – you hate Mike Love.
